CSA Info
We are excited to announce that we have CSA subscriptions available, for fresh produce starting at the end of May. We will have beautiful, fresh, local, vegetables, greens, and root vegetables.
What is a CSA?
Sometimes known as a farm co-op, a box of the week club, or a produce
subscription program, “CSA” stands for Community Supported Agriculture.
CSAs owe their inspiration to community farm initiatives in the 1970s led by Japanese women concerned with food safety, pesticide use, processed and imported foods, and the resulting decrease in the small-scale farm economy. A CSA is a direct partnership between small farmers and a committed network of local consumers whose up-front purchase guarantees them a “share” of each week’s harvest and provides producers with capital up front to seed, purchase equipment and deliver their products directly to consumers.
Why Join?
The Maitland Mountain Farm CSA is a unique effort to make fresh produce and a variety of locally-made items. Subscribers have the opportunity to reduce their grocery trips and overall carbon impact by picking up shares directly at 84 Derby Street, Specialty subscription options are an affordable and convenient way to experience the variety of nutritious, skillfully grown offerings from Maitland, and extend your support to our partnerships with select local growers.
Risks:
New England growing season is, um, extreme. Normal conditions will see smaller shares at the beginning and end of the season with a big peak in the middle, and a wet/dry/hot/cold snap can mean more or less of things that you can consistently find in the grocery store. “In season” produce grown on small farms without chemicals, fungicides and commercial fertilizers, and high tech irrigation means potential risks, which we think outweigh the benefits but should be considered before subscribing.
Highlights:
Locally grown and produced vegetables, herbs, pickled and fermented produce, supplied consistently all growing season. Convenient pickup at 84 Derby Street, reduces carbon impact by avoiding long-distance shipping for grocery store produce and shopping trips for consumers Confident, skillful land managers in the second generation of organic farming. Save your grocery budget! Purchasing similar quantity and quality products would cost members 20-25% more
Frequently Asked Questions:
How does sign-up work? Is there a deadline? Sign up and purchase any combination of subscriptions through Holly Maitland, open through May 20th, 2025 or until shares sell out.
Can I pause my subscription? Subscribers who are unable to pick up their share may send a friend, family member, or neighbor to pick up their crate for them. This is a great way to share your CSA experience and give someone an opportunity to try it.
Produce Subscription:
Produce share ($1100) lasts 20 weeks (May to September/October) This share is designed for 2-3 people.
We also have a 1/2 Share available at ($600) includes produce grown from seed using organic practices right here at Maitland Mountain Farm and our local farm partners.
The variety and quantity of contents will vary according to our New England growing season and might include spring radishes, spinach, tatsoi, lettuce, mesclun, arugula, fiddleheads, summer squash, onions, swiss chard, kale, microgreens, heirloom and cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, beets, green beans, carrots, garlic, garlic scapes, eggplant, hot peppers, cabbage, and herbs including basil, chives, cilantro, dill, lavender, lovage, mint, oregano, parsley, sage, and thyme. Toward the end of the season, there will be winter squash, greens, and maybe even sweet potatoes!
Pick Up Locations:
Weekly pick up location is 84 Derby Street at Maitland Farm, Kitchen and Spirits.
We also have the option of contactless pick-up from the farm at 23 cedarcrest ave upon request.
Produce Quantities:
Buying into Maitland’s CSA allows us to plant in quantities appropriate for shareholders, and shares are planned to provide for 2-3 people. Given the natural growing season, quantities will still vary so shareholders can expect smaller amounts in May and June. In peak harvest, quantities will be larger and the weekly member email will provide plenty of suggestions for using and storing each week’s share. Larger households seeking a larger share are encouraged to email maitlandmountainfarm@gmail.com.

Our Story
Peter Maitland has been growing food in Salem since the 70's. Maitland Mountain Farm was born in 2009, a father-daughter project of Peter and Holly Maitland. Towards the end of the farm’s first season, Holly met Andy, an ambitious cook from California who was looking for a
